History of the Richmond Model Flying Club of Staten Island, NY
From 1936 to the present
Compiled by Frank J. Pisano member AMA 4730

The club was formed as an National Aeronautic Association group
prior to being sancioned as an Academy of Model Aeronautics
(hereinafter known as the AMA) chartered club member #467 in
1936. The Richmond Model Flying Club is believed to be the
oldest continuous model flying club in the A.M.A.

The first meetings were held at the home of William R. Mott,
one of the original organizers at 26 Bond Street, in Port Richmond,
Staten Island, NY. It was brought to my attention that prior to my
becoming a member of the Club produced and marketed a Class "B" Free
Flight Kit in the early 40's called "The Modernair" which included
preformed pylon covering under the guidance of Bill Mott and the help
of members at that time.

The Club has sponsored many AMA sanctioned contest events through
the years since it's beginning with Free Flight to the present Radio
Control. The Club presents an Annual Air Show every year at our flying
facility, Al Lobaito Field Located at Gateway National Recreational Area
on Staten Island, New York, for the benefit of the local Community
and to advance interest not only for Gateway National Recreational Area
but our hobby as well.

At the present time the club has 113 members ranging in age from 14
years of age to 80 years of age. Some of our members have served as
pilots in World War II!

The Richmond Model Flying club is a chartered club (467)of the
